World famous Crab Island is one of the most talked about attractions in Destin, Florida and is definitely a must do while in town. If you’ve ever visited the Emerald Coast, chances are you’ve heard of the fun to be had. Crab Island has become a destination in itself featured on national networks and shows such as HGTV and Good Morning America, published in various magazines, and featured in publications across the globe.
What is Crab Island?
The name Crab Island makes you assume it’s an island. Actually, at one time it WAS an island, as this picture from the 1960’s archives shows:
Drifting sands from the Gulf of Mexico have eroded it over the years and now we are left with what it is today: an underwater sandbar and popular place to anchor your boat (rented or personal) for some fun in the sun. Although there is no actual land at Crab Island, the water is very shallow, ranging from 1-4ft in depth in most places, and at high tide is crystal clear. On an average day in the summer, Crab Island looks like this:
Where is Crab Island?
Crab Island is located on the north side of the Destin Bridge (or Marler Bridge) at the entrance of the Choctawhatchee Bay, inside Destin’s East Pass. It’s location makes it unique because it is open to the inflow and outflow of the crystal clear water from the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, yet it is protected from the surf and waves. Crab Island is accessible only by boat (or kayak or standup paddleboard if you are strong and in the mood for a good workout) due to the distance from shore and the strong tidal currents and boat traffic that surround it.
How Do I Get There?
Pelican Adventures offers private boat rentals complete with a US Coast Guard licensed Captain and Mate to ensure a fun and safe day on the water for your family and friends. Let the locals and professionals drive and anchor while keeping sure of the tides and weather issues. We have a variety of vessels to rent going into our 20th year in business. Pelican Adventures is located on the Destin Harbor making your trip to Crab Island only minutes from the dock!
